Artist Statement

Instructions + Observation = Cinema

This is a site-specific interactive artwork that is under the influence of Fluxus: art is the action. Audience become participant and sit on the sofa. With the aid of audio instructions and looking at the frame, their own cinema start. By observing people going through or avoid the frame and listening to the questions in the audio, audience should be able to develop a movie in their brain. This artwork aims to tell that everyone of us are stories of our own, and you can see a movie just by observing one moment of a person’s life. It is also an observation practise for phubbers.

About the artwork:

The true source of art is not in subjective feeling and the creative process, but in the everyday presence of events happening in an environment.
John Cage

This is a site-specific artwork that is under the influence of Fluxus: art is the action and can be driven by solely an instruction. Participant have to set up a cinema of their own by both following instructions and their choices that being made. The interaction between the thinking of participant and the environment is a crucial element in this artwork. Every decisions that the participant made change the outcome of the process. With the aid of audio instructions and looking at the frame, the own cinema of the participant start in his/her brain. By observing people going through or avoid the frame and listening to the questions in the audio, participant should be able to develop a movie in their brain. This artwork aims to tell that everyone of us are stories of our own, and you can see a movie just by observing one moment of a person’s life. It is also an observation practise for phubbers. The artwork crossed the media of our brain which changed visual and environment to text/ audio/ smell/ visual… everything that can happen in imagination, and form a cinema.


Venue:

It is all up to the participant where he/she want to observe. It is suggested to be somewhere with high mobility of people with different kind of people.

List of venues that is recommended:
Participant living estate, MTR stations, Sai Yeung Choi Street, Avenue of Stars, campuses, in front of supermarkets, in front of food shops etc.


Set up:

A sofa: a comfortable one, can be more than one seat if the participant want more people to join in, but not too big that block the road
A frame: at least big enough to allow 2 normal adults to pass together
A music gadget with earphones: stored and play the attached audio
A wire/ a stand: to hang the frame or to hold the frame in a fixed position

Question examples in the audio:

- How was his/her/its Day?
- What does he/she/it do in his/her/its free time?
- Did he/she/it comb his/her/its hair today? Who do it for him/her/it?
- Is there something he/she/it has dreamed of doing for a long time?
- If he/she/it knew that he/she/it would die suddenly, would he/she/it change anything about the way he/she/it is? If so, what?
- Did he/she/it poo or pee before going out? Is it stinky?
- If he/she/it could take a one month trip anywhere and money was not a consideration, where would he/she/it go?
- If he/she/it had one day in his/her/its life to live over, which would he/she/it choose and why?
- What do he/she/it think is the single best decision he/she/it has made in his/her/its life so far?
- Could he/she/it name one thing he/she/it could do to improve any important relationship in his/her/its life? What is that?
- If he/she/it could change anything about the way he/her/it were raised, what would it be?
- What is his/her/its most treasured memory?
